    Emmet Till, a 14-year-old African American Chicago native, is murdered while visiting relatives in Mississippi. His brutal death brings much-needed attention to the condition of black civil rights in the deep south.
  • Charles and Diana divorce

    The Prince and Princess of Wales, Charles and Diana, divorced after four years of separation. Diana would die in a car accident just over one year later.

  • MLK gives "I have a dream" speech

    Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivers his "I have a dream" speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. King delivered his speech, one of the most powerful in American history, to over 200,000 people on the National Mall.

  • Suffragists picket White House

    Women suffragists picket outside the White House, protesting President Woodrow Wilson's reluctance to support female enfranchisement. The resulting clash with bystanders led to some women being jailed, including Alice Paul.

  • Battle of Second Manassas begins

    The Battle of Second Manassas, also known as Bull Run, begins as Confederate General Stonewall Jackson attacks a smaller Federal column at Groveton, near John Brawner's farm in northern Virginia. The bloody encounter foreshadowed the remainder of the battle.
