  • Shays' Rebellion begins

    Daniel Shays, a Massachusetts farmer and Revolutionary War veteran, instigates an uprising in rural Massachusetts protesting the mounting financial strain imposed on farmers to pay off their war debts. Attracting over 800 followers, Shays' Rebellion lasts for the better part of one year, demonstrating the ineffectiveness of the central government.

  • Jones Act
    Congress passes the Jones Act, better known as the Philippine Autonomy Act of 1916. It replaced the previous Filipino constitution, created an elected, bicameral Filipino legislature, and pledged eventual Filipino independence.
  • Air Force Academy opens
    The United States Air Force Academy officially opens at its present site outside Colorado Springs.
