  • Andrew Johnson born

    17th President Andrew Johnson is born in Raleigh, North Carolina. Born into poverty, Johnson eventually made a solid living in the tailoring business and was later elected to represent Tennessee in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Chosen as President Lincoln's running mate in 1864, Johnson became president following Lincoln's assassination the following year.

  • Wounded Knee Massacre

    Following a dispute at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, 7th U.S. Cavalry soldiers open fire on Sioux men, women and children along Wounded Knee Creek, killing between 150 and 300. The Wounded Knee Massacre was one of the final events of the 19th century Indian Wars.

  • Texas Annexation

    The United States officially annexes the Republic of Texas, as it enters the Union as the 28th state. Texas won its independence from Mexico in 1835, and endured several failed attempts to join the United States before President John Tyler signed a Congressional resolution before leaving office.
