  • President Wilson born

    28th President Woodrow Wilson is born in Staunton, Virginia. Before being elected president in 1912, Wilson served as President of Princeton University and Governor of New Jersey. Wilson became the first president to visit Europe during the Paris Peace Conference following World War I and was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1919 after lobbying for American participation in the League of Nations.

  • Iowa enters the Union

    Iowa enters the Union as the 29th state. The "Hawkeye State" fell under American control following the Louisiana Purchase and was consolidated into the Territory of Iowa in 1838.

  • Air pioneer Billy Mitchell born

    U.S. Army General Billy Mitchell is born in Nice, France. Mitchell, the son of Wisconsin Senator John L. Mitchell, served in World War I and strongly advocated the use of military air forces. Mitchell later commanded the United States Army Air Service before being court-martialed for insubordination in 1925.
