Future President Theodore Roosevelt is born in New York City. Roosevelt fought in the Spanish-American War, served as Vice President under President William McKinley, and became the youngest president after McKinley was assassinated in 1901.
The New York subway system starts its underground service. The subway system was started by both public and private construction projects before being consolidated into the New York City Transit Authority, which supervises the largest subway system in the United States.
