  • Battle of Perryville

    Union and Confederate forces clash at the Battle of Perryville in central Kentucky. Neither side could claim a decisive victory, but following the battle, Confederate General Braxton Bragg retreated into Tennessee, ending his Kentucky Campaign.

  • Great Chicago Fire begins

    The Great Chicago Fire breaks out on DeKoven Street west of downtown Chicago. The fire burned for three days, killing over a hundred people and burning four square miles of the city.

  • Alvin York leads American unit to capture over 100 Germans

    Corporal Alvin York leads heroic assault on a German position during the Meuse-Argonne offensive. York, who took command after his superior officer was killed, helped capture 132 German prisoners and was later awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions.
