Union forces finally break the Confederate lines around Petersburg, Virginia, ending the ten month-long siege. The following day, the Army of Northern Virginia would retreat to the west and the Union army entered Richmond.
Speaking before a joint session of Congress, President Woodrow Wilson asks the legislature for a declaration of war against the German Empire. Five days later, both houses of Congress would issue the declaration with substantial majorities.
