Seventh President Andrew Jackson is born in the Waxhaws community along the North-South Carolina border. Jackson became a national hero as the commanding general at the Battle of New Orleans, a complete American victory during the War of 1812. Elected to the presidency in 1828, Jackson brought about a new era of American democracy, with expanded suffrage and a greater emphasis on the common man.
